Atrial Septal Defects

Atrial septal defect is a defect or abnormality in the interatrial septum. It is the commonest congenital heart disease seen in the adults especially in females.

         

Atrial septal defect is a defect or abnormality in the interatrial septum. It is the commonest congenital heart disease seen in the adults especially in females.

Types-

Atrial septal defects are of three types which are as follow-

1. Ostium secundum type.

2. Ostium primum type.

3. Sinus venosus type.


1. Ostium secundum type -
Ostium secundum type is one of the types of atrial septal defect which is very common. This defect occurs in mid-septal region and involves fossa ovalis.

2. Ostium primum type -
It occurs near AV valves.

3. Sinus venosus type -
Which is very rare type and it occurs high in the atrial septum near the entry of superior vena cava.


Symptoms-

1. Usually asymptomatic disease and identified or discovered only on routine examination.

2. Palpitations, recurrent respiratory infections.

3. Retarded growth and development, hyperdynamic precordium.

4. In later or advanced stage of disease, there occurs difficulty in breathing, heart failure and arrhythmias.

5. Loud first heart sound, widely split and fixed second heart sound in relation to respiration. But both these murmur decrease in intensity and later disappears in advanced stage of disease.

6. Ejection systolic murmur.

7. Mid-diastolic rumbling murmur.

8. Pulmonary hypertension.


Investigations-

1. Chest x-ray.

2. ECG.

3. Echocardiography.

4. Cardiac catheterisation.
