Abdominal Tuberculosis

Abdominal tuberculosis is a gastrointestinal disease in which there occurs tubercular involvement of gut, abdominal lymph nodes, peritoneum either of these organs collectively or of individual organs.

         

Abdominal tuberculosis is a gastrointestinal disease in which there occurs tubercular involvement of gut, abdominal lymph nodes, peritoneum either of these organs collectively or of individual organs.

Ileocaecal region is most commonly affected. Other areas which are affected by this disease are ascending colon, jejunum, sigmoid colon, rectum, duodenum, stomach and oesophagus.

Causes-

1. Abdominal tuberculosis is usually caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

2. Haematogenous spread from the primary lung focus of tuberculosis in childhood with later reactivation.

3. Spread of infection from tubercular salpingitis in females.


Symptoms-

1. It mostly affects patients of young age group.

2. Fever, abdominal pain, diarrhoea.

3. Constipation.

4. Alternating constipation and diarrhoea.

5. Weight loss.

6. Loss of appetite.

7. Fatigue.

8. Flatulent abdomen.

9. Ascites.


Investigations-

1. ESR test.

2. Hb test.

3. Serum albumin test.

4. Chest x-ray.

5. Ultrasound of abdomen.

6. Barium meal test.

7. CT scan of abdomen.

8. Ascitic fluid test.

9. Peritoneum biopsy.

10. Colonoscopy.
