Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease of joints along with multisystem involvement. Females are affected more by this disease than men.


Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease of joints along with multisystem involvement. Females are affected more by this disease than men. It affects people in the fourth and fifth decades of life.


1. Infections.

2. Genetic predisposition or hereditary in nature.

3. Autoimmune reaction.


1. Insidious onset of disease.

2. Fatigue, loss of appetite and weakness.

3. Acute onset of polyarthritis along with fever, lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly.

4. Joint pain and stiffness occur.

5. Joint pain, swelling, tenderness and painful limitation of movements.

6. It affects metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints of the hands, wrists, knees and metatarsophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints of the feet.

7. Morning stiffness of joints lasting for more than one hour.

8. Rheumatoid nodules are firm, round masses present in the subcutaneous tissues.

9. Rheumatoid vasculitis is present in patients having a high titre of circulating rheumatoid factor.

10. Polyneuropathy and mononeuritis multiplex.

11. Cutaneous ulcerations and distal gangrene.

12. Visceral infarction causing stroke, acute myocardial infarction and mesenteric arteritis.

13. Pericarditis and chronic constrictive pericarditis.

14. Felty’s syndrome.

15. Osteoporosis.

16. Normocytic normochromic anemia.

17. Mild leucocytosis and eosinophilia is there.

18. Bilateral, symmetric, inflammatory polyarthritis affecting small and large joints with sparing of axial skeleton except cervical spine.


Test done to identify or diagnose rheumatoid arthritis disease are as follow-

1. ESR test, Hb test.

2. TLC, DLC test.

3. Peripheral blood smear test.

4. RA factor test.

5. X-ray of affected joints.

6. Synovial fluid analysis.

7. Synovial biopsy.

8. Arthroscopy.

Rheumatic arthritis is a very serious disease. It can affect more than ten joints, along with morning stiffness. Patients have to suffer severe pain. There could be swelling and redness over joints. In this disease, the immune system of the patient acting against its own joints. So, this is basically an auto immune disease.
