The month of September is the National Cholesterol Education Month in the US. Blood cholesterol is the main culprit of heart diseases in the country, affecting more than 65 million Americans.

Cholesterol is growing as a powerful monster causing most of the modern fatal diseases. Cholesterol is necessary for the body and is good (HDL) to a certain limit. But when it increases it becomes bad cholesterol (LDL) and causes fatal diseases.

National Cholesterol Education Month

September is observed as the National Cholesterol Education Month in the US. It is a good time to know about your cholesterol condition, to get your blood cholesterol checked and to take steps to lower it if it is high. It is also a good time to learn about food and lifestyle choices that help you reach your personal cholesterol goals.

Good cholesterol and bad cholesterol

Cholesterol is a protein substance that travels through the bloodstream packaged inside a protein called a lipoprotein. There are two kinds of lipoproteins: a good one and a bad one.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is called “good cholesterol” because it it helps remove the bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein LDL) from arteries and also it helps return cholesterol to the liver, where it can be eliminated.

Bad cholesterol contributes to the buildup of plaque in the arteries over time. It causes narrowing of blood vessels. This narrowing of blood vessels can slow or block blood flow in them and increase your risk of heart disease. If the bad cholesterol is high, it becomes a major cause of heart disease.

How can the National Cholesterol Education Month help you?

1) Reports say that high blood cholesterol affects over 65 million Americans leading them to fatal diseases. The Cholesterol Education Month creates an awareness and helps people to prevent the risks of high cholesterol.

2) Awareness programs conducted during this month helps you to learn about lipid profiles and about food and lifestyle choices that help you maintain the cholesterol level.

3) Information regarding personal cholesterol maintenance is published through websites and media and through publications of fact sheets of statistics.

4) Guidelines are given through TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) programs. these programs discuss about diet, physical activity, and weight management. These guidelines help to control cholesterol.

5) If drug treatment is needed to reduce the bad cholesterol level, special programs are also launched to meet the need.

6) Community Group Education Programs are also conducted during this month to create awareness among the people of communities. Special programs are held to check or test cholesterol level.

The National Cholesterol Education programs conducted during the month of September help to create cholesterol awareness. It is also a good time to get your blood cholesterol checked and take steps to maintain the right level of cholesterol.
