September 14, 2012  by: Paulose  Points: 15   Category: Social    Views: 648

September 14 is observed in the Christian world as the Feast of Holy Cross. Cross is the symbol of suffering on one side and persecution on the other side. Jesus said, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)

Christian world observes the feast of the Cross on 14 September. Cross is still a mystery to the world. It is a more powerful symbol than it appears to be as a crucifix. jesus Christ has said and showed the meaning of Cross. When he said, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me”(Luke 9:23), he meant what Christians as individuals and as communities have to face in the world. Jesus was crucified for bringing the message of love. His followers are crucified for spreading the message of love and practising it in their day-to-day life.

Persecutions in Christianity

Persecutions on the Christians has been history. From the very beginning of Christianity, Christians have faced a lot of persecutions and persecutions have been the seeds of Christian growth. Even in the modern age of advanced civilization we hear news about persecutions on Christianity from all over the world.

Persecutions against Christians in the modern world

1) Persecutions against the Christians are going on all over the world today. All the continents, even the so-called Christian countries, face persecutions against Christians in some way or other. Persecution here does not mean against any denomination, but against following Christ. Catholic relief agency Aid to the Church in Need and the evangelical group Open Doors report that more than 150,000 Christians are killed for their faith each year.

2) A German secular organization, called International Society for Human Rights, estimates that 80 percent of all acts of religious discrimination in the world are directed against Christians.

3) In many countries fanatic movements, launched as religious cleansing campaigns, persecute against the Christians. Statistics reveal that Christianity is the most persecuted religious group on the earth.

4) In many places persecutions are going on as an act of suppressing the voice of Christians for religious freedom, as a part of human rights struggle.

A thought for the day of the Feast of Holy Cross

Cross unites all Christians in the name of Christ. Christians bear sufferings patiently, following their Saviour Jesus Christ. They stand for love, justice and peace. As the Swiss Cardinal Kurt Koch, the Vatican’s top official for relations with other Christians, pointed out recently “Ecumenism of the Martyrs” is a basis for unity, given that all Christian churches today share in the bloodshed.

Taking the Cross and following Jesus Christ , Christians “the Church militant” are marching towards their Eternal Goal
