Problems of Frequent Flyers

September 15, 2012  by: Sarika  Points: 12   Category: Health  Earning $0.25   Views: 989

This article talks about few of the many problems very often faced by frequent travellers.

Problems of Frequent Flyers:

Globalization and technical advancements have shrunk the world. More and more people are flying around the globe everyday due to different reasons. However one thing which is common for all frequent flyers is their concern for the adverse effects of long flights on their health. Some of the most common health problems and conditions faced by frequent flyers are:

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT):

Deep vein thrombosis which is also known as Economy Class Syndrome is a condition in which a blood clot is formed in deep veins especially in the leg. People notice pain and swelling in the region where clot has formed. Small blood clots are not really problematic but a real problem starts when a large blood clot breaks off and flows towards the lungs. In lungs it becomes pulmonary thrombus and can cause serious injury or even death. Sitting position where one’s activity is limited for long periods or cramped sitting positions are the main reasons for DVT. The air in the aircrafts is kept dry and the passengers can get significantly dehydrated which can increase the risk of developing DVT. Other risk factors include age (above 60), varicose veins, previous DVT, recent surgery or injury, oral contraception, cardio-vascular diseases, pregnancy, hormonal therapy etc. Regular stretching during the flight, drinking sufficient liquid and wearing loose fitting clothes can help prevent DVT to some extent.

Backbone problems:

People often develop problems in the backbone due to the cramped sitting position in the air crafts. On long-distance flights for many hours people sit in one position and do not have enough space to stretch or move the body. The air craft seats are often not comfortable and the space between the seat and the front seat is also very limited. It is advisable for long-distance travelers to stretch occasionally and if possible walk around the cabin during the flight to reduce the stress on the backbone as well as reduce the risk of DVT.

Problem of the Ear blockage:

It is of common occurrence that many people face problems with their ears on long or even short flights. They feel that their ears are somehow blocked and are in pain. This happens due to high altitude and because of cabin air pressure. It is advisable to chew something or swallow repeatedly. Passengers should also try to exercise yawning mouth position from time to time as it helps to open up the blocked ears.

Respiratory and other Infections:

Lot of travelers and frequent flyers spend a large part of their time at airports, in hotels and of course in aircrafts. These are ideal places for spreading of infections and other communicable diseases. Travelers should refrain themselves from the use of public toilets as much as possible. It would also be a good idea to sterilize the hands after washing with a sterilizer. This definitely will decrease the chances of carrying home some unwanted guests like bacteria and fungi.

I too hear that many frequent fliers get severe backache because of the posture and it can become chronic over a period of time...It also becomes monotonous when you have to do it all the time..

I am not a frequent flyer but yes I have taken some long flights. I have seen all these above mentioned problems in my fellow pessengers. Backbone pain and ear blockage are two most common problems which I have faced myself. The sitting condition in the cabins is so crumpled that there is no possibility to stretch your leg without hitting the person sitting in front of you. Definately all these probelms do not make flying a fun thing to do.
