Overcome the Shortness of Breath--COPD

Breathing is life. If breathing stops you are declared dead. Breathing makes you healthy. Proper breathing is a must for a healthy life.


A good breathing habit keeps you healthy. Normally, healthy people breathe about 12-14 times per minute with about 500 mL for tidal volume. Sick people struggle to breathe. they breathe faster and deeper than the normal people.

You may experience shortness of breath due to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, viral infection in the lungs, etc. make breathe shorter. Obstruction in the airways make this short breath condition. When obstruction in the respiratory path becomes chronic it damages the air sacs or the smallest breathing tubes in the lungs and reduces breathing. Breathing becomes so shallow or short that the fresh air inhaled cannot even reach the bottom of the lobes alveolar.

Shortness of breath is called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or dyspnea. In some cases it is termed as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The term COPD is not one single disease but an umbrella term used to describe a group of chronic lung diseases that cause limitations in lung airflow. Although smoking and pollution in the atmosphere lead to the damage of the lungs, genetic or age-associated changes in the structure and function of the lung may also increase the susceptibility to COPD. When your lungs are damaged, it is very difficult to undo the loss. Sometimes rescue inhalers may not be enough to make breathing easy. There are some medications and exercises to help improve your lung function so that you can breathe better.

By following certain tips you can breathe easier and overcome COPD.

1) Keep your rooms clean and ventilated. Avoid air pollution as much as possible. Keeping things in order may help them fungus-free.

2) Change your diet habits, by taking them five or six times as smaller meals instead of three larger meals a day. This helps your belly move freely, not touching the diaphragm.

3) When you are in a sitting position and not moving around place your hand gently on the chest, the other hand on the belly. When you breathe in you can feel both chest and abdomen summon up. See if you breathe 12-18 times in a minute. This shows that your breathing is healthy. If they show tightening when you inhale and the chest movement is more apparent than in the belly, it means your breathing is short and not the right way.

5) Since COPD condition gets worse over time, you should have periodical check-ups.
