Symptoms of Rickets

Rickets is caused due to deficiency of vitamin D in diet which results in failure of growing bone to mineralize in growing child, before, their epiphyses have fused.

Types -

Rickets is of five types which are as follow-

1. Secondary rickets - which is caused due to malabsorption syndrome or states.
2. Resistant rickets - which is caused due to resistant to ordinary therapeutic doses of vitamin D.
3. Renal rickets - which is caused due to renal disease like chronic renal failure.
4. Drug induced rickets - which is caused due to side effects of some drugs or medicines.
5. Tumour induced rickets - caused due to underlying malignant disease.


Symptoms -

The symptoms of rickets disease are as follow-

1. It occurs in children of growing age.
2. Hypocalcaemic tetany or seizures is found in infants of age less than 6 months.
3. Whereas in older children of age more than 6 months, there may occur failure to thrive and skeletal deformities or defects.
4. Infant is restless, pale with flabby muscles but appears well nourished although he is suffering from deficiency of vitamin D.
5. Prone to various infections especially of respiratory system and gastro-intestinal system.
6. Milestones of childhood missing for example, failure to sit, stand, crawl and failure to walk at the normal age at which they should.
7. Delayed dentition.
8. Retardation of skeletal growth that is retardation of growth of skeletal bones.
9. Skull has small round unossified areas in the membranous part.
10. Enlarged epiphyses at lower end of radius, femur, tibia and fibula.
11. Anterior fontanelle closure delayed.
12. Bowed legs, kyphosis, genu valgum, abnormalities of pelvic bone.


Investigations -

1. X-ray of wrist.
2. Serum calcium test.
3. Serum phosphate test.
4. Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 test.
5. Alkaline phosphatase activity test.
