October one is the day for the elders of the world. Some good hearts want to have this day to be observed as World Elders Day. But who celebrate it? May be some elders or some organizations who want to show a concern for elders. How does the modern world treat the elders? October 1 is the day for the elders of the world. Some good hearts want to have this day to be observed as World Elders Day. But who celebrate it? May be some elders or some organizations who want to show a concern for elders. How does the modern world treat the elders? Have the elders or senior citizens become a burden to the modern lifestyle?

The first day of October is observed as World Elders Day. Elders have been brightening the world so far with their hard work and affectionate care. But does the modern fast world think of brightening the elders’ evening life? Or does it want to push the elders into their dark night as early as possible?

Elders in the modern world

People who exceed the age 60 are called senior citizens or elders. Statistics say that more than 600 million persons of the world population have exceeded the age of 60 years and by 2025 it will double by 2025 and will reach virtually two billion by 2050.

Senior citizens in the changing world

Senior citizens of the modern world are baffled by the fast changes and the challenges that result in the most advanced technological world. World is changing more consumeristic and commercial. Everyone is more worried about the self income. As long as the seniors are productive, they are accepted by their people. But when they turn unproductive or expensive, they are considered as a burden and in most cases are turned out. They are neglected and have to spend their last days in suffering and mourning.

In most of the developing and underdeveloped countries the condition of the elders is very precarious and disheartening. Most of them are thrown out in streets, uncared and unrecognized even by well-to-do children. Many of them take refuge in old age homes. It is a consoling fact that many countries utilize them for volunteer works and for sharing their experience in community development.

Elders a burden or boon?

At the evening of their life, elders are exhausted of their working energy. Though they are physically weak, they have a great asset of experience and knowledge. They are ready to share and help their families with caring responsibilities. They can be helpful to the society in some way if they are utilised properly. They are willing to spend their twilight years for the welfare of their family or society, may be in a less capacity.

What do the elders expect?

The elders today need love, compassion and care. They expect concern from the society, without isolating them in old age homes or the elders’ world. Their present situations are completely different from what they had expected or what had been in their previous generations. They have to face several challenges such as soaring medical costs, unreliable domestic help and lack of public acceptance. Modern generation thinks that by providing food ,clothes and shelter their duty is completed towards their elders. They have no time today just to share an affectionate word with them.

Make the evening life of elders shine brighter

Let the world think a minute on this World Elders Day. Aging is a natural phenomenon. Today’s green leaf will become yellow and dry tomorrow. By making elders healthy and happy, the present generation can gain a lot. Let the evening life of elders be cared and shared for building up a better world.
