World Animals Day is observed on October 4 of every year since it was started in 1931. It is fitting that it was chosen on that day of the year since it has been the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi who loved all creatures very much.

The world has been celebrating October 4 as the World Animals Day since 1931. When a convention of ecologists gathered in the Italian city of Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species, they chose October 4 as the World Animal Day since it is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Animals have been helpful companions of humans since the beginning of human life. It is a great opportunity to think of the animals, their useful relationship with human life and why many of the animal species are endangered.

World Animals Day to care for the conservation of animals

Animals have been great help to mankind. Extinction of animal species is the greatest threat to humanity. It is estimated that by the end of this century more than half of the existing animal species will be extinct. Animal extinction is a threat to every living being on the earth.

It has been a natural process that disappearance of one species may be replaced by another as a course of evolution. But in the recent past this replacement has also become impossible. Scientists have been warning about the fast disappearance of animal species due to various reasons, especially by the ecological changes caused by man.

Reasons for animal extinction by human activities

1) Animal life on the earth today is under great threat, caused by man. Many reasons of the recent changes in human life have caused threat to the animal existence.

2) Increase in human population leads to encroachment of forest areas which have been the habitat of many species. Man has begun to move into the animal world endangering their safety. Animals are losing their natural habitats.

3) Hunting and poaching for selfish reasons have caused a great damage in animal life. Pet trade and wildlife trade has been a steady threat to the animal world. For entertainment and business purposes animals are caught exploited.

4) Although pet ownership number in the world has increased, treatment to the animals is in a very degraded level.

5) Modern technology has been a challenge to the life of animal world. Electric waves, vibrations in the atmosphere, etc have endangered animal lives.

6) Man made pollution has contaminated water and air and even the plant life on which animals are depending. This has affected their healthy life. Human selfishness has caused global warming and climatic changes.

Animals need human love and protection

Man should realize that threat to animal world world is a threat to mankind also. The exploitation of natural resources that often leads to animal extinction, may seem to be temporary economic growth, but in course of time it will annihilate the whole humanity. Hence, we should strive to find the right balance between human and animal welfare that can keep humanity in harmony with nature.
