October 19, 2012  by: Paulose  Points: 15   Category: Health    Views: 504

It may seem strange to think that there is poison inside our homes that can harm our children. But it is the reality. Hundreds of household products that we use today have the risk of danger to children.

It may be hard to believe that our homes contain many items that can poison our children. We do not realize that many things that we use in modern homes contain poisons that are harmful for our children. Just think of the cleaners, medicines, sanitary things, pesticides, plants, alcohol, etc. that we commonly use at home. Are they cent percent poison proof? Have we ever thought that they can be very dangerous, even deadly, especially to children?

How can household materials be harmful to children?

Children are normally curious. Though harmful materials are stored in places where children cannot reach easily, their curiosity is always after reaching them. A little carelessness may cause young children problems. Infants explore everything with their mouths. Little children are always vulnerable to being poisoned.

Potential poisons at home

1) Kitchen

Cleaning things such as dish wash soap, glass cleaners, detergents, drain cleaners, oven cleaners, diet aids, some herbal products, etc. are easily accessible to children and may harm them in no time.

2) Bathroom

Bathrooms are full of potential poisons. Bath oil, perfumes, hairspray, aftershave lotion, other cleansers, sanitizers, baby powders, hair removers, mouthwash, shampoo, toilet fresheners, etc. cause hazardous situations in children. In a hurry or carelessness many of the personal care items are left accessible to children.

3) Bedroom

Bedroom is another dangerous place where children are easily poisoned. Prescription medicines, over-the counter- medications, vitamin tablets, sleeping aids, sleeping pills, nail polish, nail remover, cleaners for jewelry, perfumes, contraceptives, moth balls, etc. may be harmful to children.

4) Living room

Although you may be careful about harmful things in the living room, people who visit may bring medications which may be potential hunting grounds for a curious child. Paint chips on furniture, chemicals on window sills, playpen, toys, etc may have dangerous poisons. carpets may contain chemicals and pesticides.

5) Garage and gardening area

Garden supplies have to be handled very carefully. These areas are always harmful places for little children and so utmost care should be taken in following the children when they are here.

Modern lifestyle contains many harmful things in our rooms. They need careful attention from parents and elders so that they may not affect little children.
