Acne is a skin condition that causes pimples or "zits." This includes whiteheads, blackheads, and red, inflammed patches of skin (such as cysts).

Types of Acne:

There are many different kinds of pimples that can be seen with acne. The most common types are,

* Whiteheads (comedones) - pimples that stay under the surface of the skin
* Blackheads - pimples rise to the skin's surface and look black
* Papules - small pink bumps that can be tender
* Pustules - pimples are red at the bottom and have pus on top
* Nodules - large, painful, solid pimples that are deep in the skin
* Cysts - deep, painful, pus-filled pimples can cause scars

Formation of Pimples:

Pimples from mainly because of dead skin, oil and bacteria. Human skin is an amazing organ -- protective, waterproof, and exceedingly useful. It's also constantly changing and regenerating itself. Sometimes the dead skin cells may mix with excess oil (sebum) thus leading to the formation of pimples. Sebum is the natural oil found in the skin. Sebum is made within the sebaceous glands. This mixture plugs the pore, causing swelling. Bacteria can grow in the mix and lead to infection and pus.

Some False Impressions about Acne:

Some have a false understanding of acne that it results due to allergic reactions. But acne is a disease that affects the oil glands of the skin.

There is a false impression that greasy, fried foods make acne worse. Parents often advise teens to avoid pizza, chocolate, greasy and fried foods, and junk food. These foods are not good when we consider overall health of the body. But these foods have nothing to do with acne.

Another false impression is that blackheads are the result of oil and dirt. If sebum breaks through to the surface, the result is a "whitehead." If the oil accumulates melanin pigment or becomes oxidized, the oil changes from white to black, and the result is a 'blackhead'. Therefore dirt or oil has no relations with Blackheads.

Occurrence:

Acne is the most common disease of the skin. Acne affects all races and ages. But it is most common in teenagers and young adults. An estimate shows that 80% of people between the age group 11 to 30 have acne outbreaks at some point of their life. Some people may get acne at 40s and 50s.

Baby Acne:

Acne is often seen in babies. Acne developing in babies is called as "baby acne" or "neonatal acne." Pink pimples are often caused by exposure in the womb to maternal hormones. No treatment is needed for baby acne. Time will cure this. Sometimes the acne may last for few months also.

Rosacea:

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that makes your face turn red and may cause swelling and skin sores that look like acne. It generally affects people in their 30s and 40s and older. There is sometimes no "bright line" separating acne from rosacea; however, there are no blackheads or whiteheads in rosacea.

Treatment:

The best home care for mild acne includes gentle cleansers and skin care. One never pick or squeeze pimples. Playing with or popping pimples, no matter how careful and clean you are, can cause scarring and nearly always makes bumps stay redder and bumpier longer. The focus of both home treatment and prescription therapy is to: unclog pores, kill bacteria and minimize oil. We may come across many products that assure treating acnes. The truth is there is no magic product or acne regimen that is right for every person and situation.

Is acne a serious health threat?

Acne is not a serious health threat. But it may cause scars which may last for lifelong. The best way to treat scar is the early treatment. Doctor may suggest over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription drugs to treat scars. Some acne medicines are put right on the skin. Other medicines are pills that you swallow. The doctor may tell you to use more than one medicine.
