The Gospels of the Bible narrate so many healing incidents. Many people were healed from many ailments. But Bartimaeus is the only person mentioned with all the details about him. What made him so important?

The Gospels tell about the life of Jesus. He preached the good news of the love of God. He lived his words by doing good to all and laying down his life for his mission. During his ministry, he healed so many sick people. He assured that God gives people whatever is asked in real faith. Whenever he healed ailments, he showed that faith in God can cure. Mark narrates the story of Bartimaeus who was blind. He was a beggar, sitting on the roadside and asking for the charity of people. What gives more importance in this healing is that the condition of Bartimaeus is given with all his family details and his his great faith is portrayed in his actions that led to his healing.

The background of the healing incident is very interesting. In the tenth chapter of Mark gospel, Jesus speaks about children and the kingdom of God belongs to those who have childlike faith. Then comes the rich man who is perfect in observing the commandments of Moses but is more attached to his wealth. Then comes the interesting scene of James and John claiming for the high posts in the kingdom of Jesus. Last is the typical healing scene of the blind beggar Bartimaeus. Incidentally, this is the last healing in Mark’s gospel.

Bartimaeus had been an unknown blind beggar till Jesus comes across him. As usual, Bartimaeus is sitting on the roadside of the on the way towards Jericho, begging for his livelihood. Since it was festival time there was a heavy rush on the road. Bartimaeus hears about Jesus healing people and he is passing that way. Something flashed in his innersoul. He dares to shout “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Though people rebuke him, the blind man confidently keeps on crying. Jesus stops and tells, “Call him.” Now the mood of the people change and encourage the beggar saying, “ Take courage. Get up, he is calling you.”

Bartimaeus did not waste even a second. “And throwing off his mantle he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ And the blind man said to him, ‘Master, let me receive my sight.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your faith has made you well.’ And immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.” (Mark 10:50-52)
A clear picture of faith and how the healing occurred.

The blind beggar gives us the richness of faith and insight

The unknown beggar who was blind and discarded by the people was rewarded for his great faith. The people who had sight and rebuked the beggar to be silent wonder at his faith which healed him of his blindness and made him throw off his mantle to “follow Jesus on his way”. He is now recognized as faithful Bartimaeus son of Timaeus who teaches the great lesson of faith to generations.
