Theories of light

This article will give the information on the theories of light. In this article, I have explained Newton''''s corpscular theory of light, Huygens'''' theory of light and Maxwell''''s theory of light.

         

Generally, light is sensation to our naked eye. But, for this light, so many theories are proposed. These theories explain the nature of light. They are

i)Newton Corpuscular theory of light:



According to Newton, he assumed that light consists of tiny particles. They are called as corpuscles.

A source of light emits tiny particles in all directions. Different colours of light are having different sizes of corpuscles. These corpuscles travel in straight line with great speed which proves rectilinear propagation of light. Mechanical action of these corpuscles causes the sensation of light on the retina. Reflection of light is defined as the repulsion of particles with the particles of the denser medium.[B]Refraction is the attraction of particles of rarer medium with denser medium. According to this theory, mechanical action of these corupscles causes sensation to retina.

Huygens' theory of light:


According to this theory, it was assumed that light travels through highly elastic and diluted medium and named it as ether. But, between sun and the earth, there is no medium. That means ether medium is an illusion. This Huygens' theory explains reflection, refraction and diffraction. But, it could not explain polarisation.

Maxwell's electromagnetic theory of light:


Maxwell proposed that light rays are electromagnetic waves. That means light rays are effected by time varying electric field and time varying magnetic field. Electromagnetic waves caused by accelerated charges. So, light rays may be charged particles. Electromagnetic waves are transverse in nature. Electromagnetic waves travels with the speed of light.

Huygens' principle:


According to this principle, a point source of light emits wavelets. These wavelets forms wavefront.
