Importance of International Tolerance Day

November 20, 2012  by: Paulose  Points: 15   Category: Inspirational Stories    Views: 402

Tolerance is an essential virtue necessary for an amicable and peaceful life. International Tolerance Day is observed on 16 November, initiated by the United Nations. The day calls for the universal attention to educate people about the necessity of tolerance in society and helping them understand the negative effects of intolerance. It is an attempt to cool down the hot spots that may lead to the burst and utter collapse of the world.

The world is advancing in technology and science which have brought the planet earth or the whole universe into the palm of hand. The knowledge may project the differences and annihilate the planet in no time. The International Tolerance day, observed on 16 November by the United Nations, is an attempt to build up tolerance and understanding among people, communities and nations. The need of tolerance is felt in every aspect of modern life more than anytime in human history. Unless the modern world understands the seriousness and necessity of tolerance, it is extremely difficult to exist in peace and harmony.

What is tolerance?

Tolerance is the mental condition to accept differences. It is the leeway, navigating between heading and track. It is necessary for both sides to allow certain imperfections and inherent variability without compromising. It is an amicable sharing and accepting inequalities for a harmonious life. Only tolerance can build up the harmony needed to address the pressing challenges and secure a better future of humanity.

Why is there intolerance in the modern world?

1) Modern world has turned to be more selfish and has drawn boundary lines everywhere--in one’s own personality, in family relationships, communities, states and countries.

2) Individual and social mentalities of modern life are based upon social and material rank -- the “haves” and the “have-nots”. “You have more than me” mentality has become intolerant.

3) Modern world has gone so selfish that the world is focusing only on the material and physical side. “All resources are mine and I should have them now itself” mentality has creeped into societies and leads to intolerance and wars.

The importance of International Tolerance Day

1) The International Tolerance Day according to the message of the UNESCO “is a focus for educating people about the need for tolerance in society and helping them understand the negative effects of intolerance”.

2) The world has much changed. Tolerance and understanding one another have become a must for existence in the twenty-first century. In the modern globalized world, in which societies are growing more diverse, tolerance is the central point of living together.

3) Unfortunately, tolerance has become a great challenge in the face of modern economic and social pressures, which force societies towards exploiting fears and highlighting differences to stoke hatred of minorities, immigrants and the disadvantaged.
