Diabetes is a torture on the tongue. You cannot eat what your tongue craves to taste. Diabetes is the most threatening disease that restricts your diet. Studies say that mindful eating can be a boon to the diabetic patients.

         

November is the month dedicated for the awareness of diabetes. Diabetes is an epidemic disease growing in the modern world because of the change in food habits. You want to eat what you love; but diabetes puts a check for your craving tongue. You cannot eat as you like. Your diet is controlled.

Can mindful eating help the diabetes patients eat and enjoy whatever they want to taste?

Diabetes is a threatening disease of the modern lifestyle. It is one of the major fatal diseases of modern world. It is the leading cause of kidney failure, heart diseases, stroke, blindness and limb amputations. World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that more than 346 million people worldwide have diabetes which is expected to be double in the next decade. The number of people affected by type 2 diabetes is increasing in every country. The most dangerous situation of this fatal disease is that more than 50% of the diabetic patients are not diagnosed or even have any access to treatments.

Can mindful eating help diabetic patients?

1) The diabetic patients have to be on strict diet to support normal blood sugar level and maintain a healthy weight to protect their general health, preventing them from diabetic complications.

2) Researches say that they can eat all foods on condition that certain foods have to be eaten with moderation.

3) It is a common belief that eating sugar causes diabetes. Reasonable quantity of sugar can help maintaining target blood sugar level between 70 and 130. Sugar in high calorie foods such as candy and soda can endanger this level.

How can mindful eating help diabetic patients?

1) Mindful eating is an ancient practice. There is a proverb in Tamil which means drinking solid foods and eating liquids can make your diet most successful and enable you live for hundred years. This means mindful eating promotes your digestion processes.

2) Concentration on eating, keeping the mind away from distractions such as TV, work, driving, etc., will help better digestion. These distractions make eating only a habitual ritual.

3) Focus your attention on the foods you eat. Disengage yourself from the habitual ritual of eating. Smell the flavor, look at the designs, feel the texture and taste the goodness of the food you eat. Look at the positive side. This helps maintenance of blood sugar at the optimum level.

4) Satisfaction from eating is very important to make it healthy. It is a mental attitude. It is a different kind of nourishment that comes through your mind. This emotional level of satisfaction can be obtained only by practice.

5) Stuffing your stomach with foods cannot make you enjoy your foods. It will act in the reverse and increase the sugar level.

Mindful eating is a positive approach of controlling diabetes. It is a practical body-mind approach. It makes you enjoy your food and frees your mind from the rigid rules of diabetic diet.
