Alfalfa for Diabetes and Cholesterol

Alfalfa, botanically called medicago sativa, is a perennial flowering plant in the pea family which is found almost all over the world. Mainly used for feeding livestock, alfalfa has been one of the ancient herbs used for centuries for various ailments. It is easy to grow and thrives in odd weather conditions. It is called, buffalo herb, lucerne grass (in Asian countries), batua in Hindi and kudhirai masal (horse feed) in Tamil. It is quite different from horse gram (Macrotyloma uniflorum) which is also a variety of beans and is commonly used in India as seed and sprout. The Arabic word for alfalfa means “father of all foods”.

Rich nutrients of alfalfa

Alfalfa is high in protein and rich in vitamin contents which make it a nutritional food for humans. It is rich in beta carotene, vitamin B complex, and vitamins E and K. Seeds, leaves and roots of alfalfa are used as herbal remedies for various diseases.

Alfalfa in Ayurveda

Ayurveda uses alfalfa as a tonic for purifying the blood, since it is considered to have alterative, diuretic, antipyretic and hemostatic effects. It is an ingredient in Ayurvedic tonics and medicines to treat nutritional deficiencies. Ayurveda considers alfalfa good for constitutions of pitta humor. It is often combined with other herbs such as dandelion, nettles and horsetail.

Alfalfa for diabetes

1) Alfalfa is rich in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients and is known to reduce blood sugar levels. Although alfalfa is traditionally used for diabetes, its properties for diabetes are still under study due to its estrogenic effects.

2) Researchers of the University of California at Davis have revealed that the alfalfa tablets or capsules were effective in the treatment of the diabetes when insulin was a failure. They have also concluded that the high amount of manganese found in alfalfa may have been the real reason behind the success of alfalfa in treating this disease.

3) Alfalfa leaves can be consumed raw or prepared as tea. Nowadays alfalfa is available as tablet or capsule. It can also be used as a tea with one or two teaspoons of its seeds steeped in boiling water. It serves as a general tonic.

4) One teaspoon of alfalfa seeds sprinkled on the meal you eat makes an amazing herbal remedy to lower blood sugar levels.

Alfalfa for cholesterol

1) Seeds, leaves and roots of alfalfa are used as herbal remedies for lowering cholesterol, as they reduce atheroslerotic plaque.

2) Several studies have proved that alfalfa supplementation reduced blood cholesterol levels and it is very effective for reducing high cholesterol known as type II hyperlipoproteinemia. The fibers in alfalfa prevent deposits on blood vessels.

Alfalfa is good for several other health problems. It is a herb commonly found everywhere. The health benefits of this amazing herb are still under study.
