How to Get the Best out of this Christmas

December 14, 2012  by: Xavier  Points: 20   Category: Inspirational Stories    Views: 966

Christmas is celebrated all over the world joyfully. Many celebrate it as a social festival. Here are a few suggestions on how you can benefit the best from this Christmas.

I taught in a Senior Secondary School in Nepal, the Hindu kingdom on the Himalayas. Christmas Day was not a holiday there. Not a student was Christian in the school. Yet, on a 25th December, I was surprised to see a senior boy holding a clay replica, which looked like a miniature Christmas tree. Though I guessed what the boys of the senior section intended to do, I asked the boy what it was. “It’s a Christmas tree, sir. We are going to have a Christmas tree party.” It is a well known phenomenon that now Christmas is not celebrated only by Christians but also by a vast number of people who are not professedly Christians. Decorations are seen even on non-Christian homes. Everyone likes to have a share of a Christmas cake. Heaps of cakes are sold in supermarkets, shops and even at street corners and people of all faiths buy them to celebrate the birthday of Lord Jesus Christ in their homes. Crowds of people are seen visiting churches and shrines. Christmas is a time of blessings. “Glory to God in the highest and peace to the people of good will on earth,” so sang the messengers from heaven that night. Our homes, our lives, our offices, our places of work, our relationships, our friends, our projects and everything can be filled with blessings if we can just make a few preparations. I suggest a few steps which can help to multiply your Christmas blessings.
1. Prepare Yourself: Prepare yourself for the birthday of Christ by reading the Christmas stories in the Bible. Get hold of a Holy Bible and read the first two chapters of St. Mathew’s and St. Luke’s gospels and the first chapter of St. John’s. Read a few verses everyday and meditate on them for a while. Some churches have four weeks of Advent as a time of preparation and they also suggest a piece of reading for each day of this time.
2. Pray more: By this I don’t mean that you spend hours on praying. Just say short prayers more often. I suggest a few short payers below.
-Lord Jesus, come into my heart.
-Lord Jesus, fill me with your blessings.
-Lord Jesus, come to my family and touch everyone with your blessings.
-Lord Jesus, bless my wife and children.
-Lord Jesus, give me your peace and joy.
-Lord Jesus, bless everyone in my place of work.
-Lord Jesus, help me solve my problems.
-Lord Jesus, help me be a good human being.
You can formulate your own prayers as per your need.
3. Donate to a charity: You can be blessed more if you give your mite to a charity during this season. You need not give an enormous amount of money. It is your attitude which is important. Let us say you save to donate five dollars to a charity in India. It can buy food for half a month for an orphan in my Children’s Home.
4. Give your time: Money is not the only thing you can give. You can spend a few minutes with a lonely person. You can visit a senior citizens home and talk to someone who no one comes to see. Tell stories to underprivileged children or conduct a painting session and give them a candy each as prize.
5. Build up relationships: Meet the people you haven’t met for a long time. Send cards and messages. Mend broken relationships. Ask pardon of those you have hurt. Forgive those who have hurt you. This is something many of us hate to do due to our ego. But once you do it, you will find peace of heart and you can lead a more healthful life.
6. Get reconciled with God: It follows from the previous point. If for some reason you have gone away from God, Christmas is the best suitable time to get reconciled with Him. Accept your mistakes and say sorry. Some churches have the provision of the sacrament of reconciliation. If you can avail yourself of the opportunity, you will do yourself a great favour. You will be more open to receive the blessings of Christmas.
7. Attend a Christmas Service or the Holy Mass: A Christmas Service or the Holy Mass is the climax of the birth celebration of Christ. It will have readings related to Christmas, messages or explanation of the readings, carols singing which will raise your heart towards God and give you a spiritual experience which you can never get at merrymaking parties. And, one can never be sure in what way you may be touched by divine graces. The blessings you will receive may be beyond all imagination. The joy you will receive this Christmas may well carry on to the next year’s Christmas.
I have suggested here some ways to multiply the blessings of Christmas. If you act upon them, your Christmas will surely be different from the ones of the previous years. Your merrymaking too will be permeated with a new meaning and thrill. I wish you with my whole heart-A Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year 2013 .

Christmas is a universal festival. It is the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ. He preached love and faith in the Fatherhood. Christmas is an occasion that shows humanity the value of love. Thank you Xavier for this nice article.
