Staying in the Boat, Not in the Water

December 14, 2012  by: Paulose  Points: 12   Category: Inspirational Stories    Views: 296

Autumn is a wonderful season, followed by a wonderful winter. Leaves change in color and fall to the ground to nourish the trees through their roots. Winter follows and covers them all with a glorious snow of whiteness. Seasons teach us the great lesson of change. We live in the world, but off the world.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, the great sage of Hindu philosophy and the Guru of Swami Vivekananda, once said,
“A boat may stay in the water,
But water should not stay in the boat.
An aspirant may live in the world,
But the world should not live in him.”

Very thoughtful words. They tell us how we should live on this earth. We must live on this earth but not of this earth. Life undergoes changes according to age and season. But it goes on well as long as it goes by the norms of nature and laws of God. Laws of God are not anywhere else. They are written in on the plate of our conscience.

Seasons change and teach us lessons

Change of seasons always teaches us great lessons of God through His nature. In autumn, leaves turn in color, from green to yellow, orange and red and then fall to the ground where they nourish the soil. As they decay, they nourish the dormant roots and protect the trees from energy loss and death. Although the leafless branches of trees give a sad look, we know it is the part of God’s plan. We are strengthened more by His great wisdom. The spring and summer will come giving a new meaning and life to the trees.

The same thing happens in every life. We have trials, troubles and tribulations in life which make us sad. They are changes in our lives. They tell us things will change. They tell us about our great journey on this earth. Experience has taught us that everything changes and happy times come again.

Our journey on this earth towards eternal happiness

St. Paul writes, “For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.” (Philippians 3:18-21, Bible ESV)

We live on this earth; but eyes should be fixed on the goals of our life. We are created to live and to love: love others and nature. We live our life of love by sharing. Every human being is a part of our life. Greed and hatred will fill us with the water of selfishness and drown our life boats.
