River Ganges is Getting Ready For the Historic Maha Kumbh

River Ganges or Ganga is the holiest river for the Hindu people. It is the most sacred river in India which absolves all your sins by taking a holy bath in the river. Maha Kumbh or Kumbh Mela is an important festival held at Allahabad every 12 years when most of the Hindus and the holy sages from all over India will gather for holy bath.


River Ganges is the holiest river for the Hindus. On the banks of Ganges are located many pilgrim centers of Hinduism. Down from the Himalayas the holy Ganga passes through many holy places, such as Rishikesh, Haridwar and Varanasi, before reaching Allahabad where she joins her sisters Yamuna and Saraswati. Confluence or meeting of these three rivers at Allahabad is called Triveni Sangam. This confluence of rivers at Allahabad is considered as the most sacred association which brings abundant blessings to all people who gather there and take a holy bath.

The importance of Maha Kumbh

The festival of Maha Kumbh is the rarest occasion longed by every Hindu devotee as the most auspicious occasion in his lifetime. According to Hindu mythology, the destiny of the human race aligns every 12 years just as the planetary alignment. The Hindus believe that bathing in the sacred waters at the Maha Kumbh will purge them of all their sins as well as the sins of their ancestors.

Maha Kumbh of Allahabad

Maha Kumbh or Kumbh Mela is an important festival held at Allahabad every 12 years when most of the Hindus and the holy sages from all over India will gather for holy bath. It is a holy occasion of pilgrimages and holy baths to be absolved from all sins. The next Mahakumbh is to be held next year (2013). Starting from the festival of Makar Sankranti on 14th January, 2013, the Kumbh Mela will be highlighted on various holy occasions and will end with the festival of Mahashivaratri on 10th March, 2013.

Mega event to attract more than 80 million people

The festival of Maha Kumbh, to be held next year is expected to be attended by the world’s largest congregation of devotees, from all over India and abroad. It is estimated that more than 80 million people, may be the largest human gathering in history on pilgrimage, will gather in Allahabad for the Mela. People from all over the world, irrespective of the barriers of caste, creed, colour and other disparities, are expected to throng at the place of Triveni Sangam.

The Uttar Pradesh government and the tourism department have already launched many projects to make the spiritual festival successful. Elaborate arrangements to accommodate the pilgrims are going on in Allahabad and nearby places.

Maha Kumbh is an expression of deep faith of the Hindu people. The rituals and ceremonies make the people think of their destiny and live a holier life.
