Therapeutic Uses of Fish Oil

Omega-3 has become the modern mantra of health. Omega-3 fatty acids are one type of essential fatty acids that our body needs most. Fish oil contains some more which are also necessary for health. Read on for a healthy use of fish oil.

         

Fish oil is available today in various forms of supplements under various brand names. It is the most essential supplement for heart problems and arthritis which are affecting modern people very much. It is also used to treat menstrual pain, osteoporosis, depression, kidney stone, chronic fatigue, allergies, and so on.

Fish oil in modern use

In earlier days, fish oil was given as cod liver oil as a home remedy for many health problems. It had been the inevitable cure for curing rickets. Today, cod liver oil and oils from other fish are used as constituents of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are one type of fatty acids that our body needs. Our body also needs other types of fatty acids such as omega-6 just as we need many types of vitamins.

Although we may not need omega-3 on a daily basis, our diet should provide us at least 5 grams of essential fatty acids daily.

Foods that contain fatty acids

In addition to whole grains, nuts such as almond, vegetables and fruits contain significant amount of fatty acids. Taking fish oil supplements can balance the need of fatty acids. Cod liver oil, and oils of Salmon, mackerel, halibut, and other coldwater fish are used as fish oil supplements.

Therapeutic uses of fish oil

1) Heart problems:
The most exciting use of fish oil is its use in heart problems. Fish oil lowers triglyceride level of (bad)cholesterol and raises the level of HDL or good cholesterol. It dilutes or thins the blood which helps heart health.

2) Arthritis:
Another important use of fish oil is its effective use in treating the early stages of arthritis. It reduces the symptoms of arthritis without side effects which other drugs may produce.

3) Reduces menstrual pain:
Fish oil is a great boon for women by relieving them from their menstrual pain. It contains the essential omega-3 fatty acids.

4) Bipolar disorder:
Fish oil has been great help for solving bipolar disorder, which is commonly known as manic-depressive illness.

5) Psoriasis:
Fish oil is used in treating psoriasis to a certain level to reduce inflammation and improve the signs and symptoms of the disease, such as itching and scaling.

There are many more uses of fish oil as supplements. Modern health world is studying the healing aspects of fish oil to relieve humanity from the increasing health problems. Using it in psychological disorders such as depression is still under consideration.
