Some causes and myths

Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest and shortness of breath. There are many myths surrounding Asthma and people tend to fear and take far too many precautions thereby making the person suffering from Asthma become even more stressed which slowly deteriorates the quality of life of the person suffering from Asthma.

Asthma , as we all know is a condition in which the airways ( bronchial tubes) that carry oxygen to the lungs become narrow thereby inducing a state where breathing becomes difficult or labored. The narrowing of the passage is due to the thickening ,swelling and tightening of the muscles lining the bronchial tubes which become inflamed. A sticky mucus blocks the airways thereby making breathing difficult . When this condition persists and becomes chronic a person is known to have an Asthmatic condition.

There are many myths surrounding Asthma and people tend to fear and take far too many precautions thereby making the person suffering from Asthma become even more stressed which slowly deteriorates the quality of life of the person suffering from Asthma. This happened with a friend of mine who was detected with asthma and the physician , who treated her was just a general practitioner in a small town medical clinic , pronounced the verdict that she had to take medication for life and could not exert herself and that she is at the mercy of the disease for life. The attitude of her family was even worse , they began cautioning her about all her actions - she could not do any heavy work, not go to any hill stations, not go out in the rain, not eat spicy food. The list was endless and her whole life changed , she became a morose home bound person all the time worrying about herself and her ' disease '...until one day she met a relative who was a surgeon very open to new ideas. He was amazed at what she and her family attitude had done to her and with some well timed advise was able to make her come out of her hiding and deal with the disease in a more practical manner. She is leading a normal and healthy life now after five years of stressful existence.

There are a number of myths surrounding the disease

1, Asthma is a life long ailment

One cannot put all types of asthma into the same bracket, some of the types can easily be cured.Like for example when it develops in small children, with breathing exercise and medication the disease normally vanishes after they become adults. With the right kind of treatment ,diet and exercise most types of Asthma can be cured and in some cases the patient gets automatically cured , probably because his/her immune system becomes stronger or due to the slight change in the weather conditions which benefits the person.

2, Asthma is hereditary

There is some truth in this but there are not enough evidences to prove that it is necessarily so.If a Asthmatic patient marries a non Asthmatic patient there is only a 20% chance of their off spring becoming Asthmatic. However, other conditions might increase this - mothers smoking during pregnancy, closed rooms ,constant use of mosquito repellent, strong smell of paint for a long period of time, use of certain strong smelling corrosive cleaning liquids can increase the chance of acquiring Asthma especially of there is a family history.

3, Asthma is contagious

According to doctors there is absolutely no question of this since it is the outcome of blocked airways within oneself. If there are several family members in a family suffering from Asthma, it may be due to other factors like common allergy or the shared environmental and not because it is contagious.

4, Asthmatic woman should not marry

The argument put forward is that a woman having Asthma may have problems during pregnancy and delivery, also it may not be safe to breastfeed the child. However, there is no truth in this since there are countless number of women who have either had Asthma before they got married or developed it later in their pregnancy , gone ahead and had their babies with no problems.

A little bit of extra care can be taken when you are aware that the pregnant lady is Asthmatic by avoiding certain food items and exposure to substances and emotional stress all of which can trigger an Asthma attack

5,Asthmatics should not exercise

According to specialists , Exercise actually increases your physical tolerance by boosting the levels of Gamma Interferon , which is a protective chemical in the blood. It builds up our body's immunity and resistance. In addition, the aerobic capacity of the lungs gets improved thereby the person derives clinical benefits.

What is to be avoided is heavy physical work and exertion which can make you gasp for breath. There are any number of asthmatics who have excelleed in sports. There is the case of American swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Van Dyken , who had been an asthmatic since her childhood, so also cricketer Ian Botham and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who dint let Asthma stop them playing vigorous sports or exercising.
