My Grandma Warned Me of Diabetes If I Drank Coffee

January 05, 2013  by: Paulose  Points: 15   Category: Food & Drinks    Views: 612

I love drinking coffee. My grandma used to warn me not to drink coffee because it will cause diabetes. She was suffering from diabetes. She always pointed out at my father’s health condition who also had diabetes type II. Research of Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee says that drinking 3-4 cups of coffee daily reduces the risk of diabetes type II.

Does drinking coffee worsen the condition of diabetes? Is there any health benefit by drinking coffee? Earlier There has been an article in this site titled, “Enjoy coffee and reduce breast cancer”, showing that drinking 2-3 cups of coffee daily can reduce the risk of breast cancer among women. It has been proved by the studies of Lund University and Malmö University in Sweden. Now, another research by another team has come out proving that drinking 3-4 cups of coffee daily can reduce risk of developing Type II diabetes.

Can drinking coffee reduce the risk of Diabetes type II?

Recent studies point out that the habit of regular coffee drinking has been found to prevent diabetes type II.

1) The website WebMD, while stating the potential health benefits and drawbacks of regular coffee says that coffee drinkers, compared to nondrinkers, are less likely to have type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and dementia. It continues to say that coffee drinkers have fewer cases of certain cancers, heart rhythm problems, and strokes.

2) Frank Hu, MD, MPH, PhD, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, says based on more than 15 studies that the vast majority of those studies have shown drinking coffee prevents diabetes type II. He says that decaffeinated coffee may also have the same benefit as regular coffee.

3) Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee (ISIC) has recently published the report of research into the connection between coffee consumption and diabetes risk, which had been presented at a session of the 2012 World Congress on Prevention of Diabetes and Its Complications (WCPD).
The summary of this epidemiological study reveals that there is a 25 percent lower risk of developing Type II diabetes among people who drank 3-4 cups of coffee per day, when compared with people who drank fewer than 2 cups per day. At the same time there is also a risk of increase in diabetes if the quantity of drinking coffee goes beyond 3-4 cups a day.

4) The studies say that what makes drinking coffee reduce diabetes risk is still unknown. They opine that it may be associated with the abstinence of the coffee drinkers from the unhealthy habits such as smoking and a sedentary lifestyle.

It may be good news for the people who like to drink coffee. Perhaps further studies may bring out more benefits attributed to the habit of drinking coffee. Proper use of anything is helpful for health and beyond the limit is always harmful.
