Udupi - A Coastal Pilgrimage Center and a Popular Tourist Destination

The Historical town



Udupi is a place worth visiting , although it was a quiet town a decade or so earlier, these days it is filled with tourists from other parts of India and other countries. Udupi is a land of ethereal beauty sandwiched between the lush greenery of Western Ghats on the East and the Arabian Sea on the West. Udupi is considered to be the cultural capital of Karnataka since many artistes and writers of repute have originated from there. Thulu is the main language spoken and Kannada is the official language.

Udupi is considered to be the cultural capital of Karnataka since many artistes and writers of repute have originated from there. Tulu is the main language spoken and Kannada is the official language.However, like anywhere else in India language poses no problem to outsiders since everyone has at least a working knowledge of Hindi and English.

A holy place



The strip of land between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats is known as Parashurama Kshetra ( Holy land of Sage Parashurama). Legends claim that this piece of land which was submerged in the Sea , had ben reclaimed by Parashurama . According to historical accounts Parashurama Kshetra has four sub divisions namely Maratha,Konkana,Tuluva and Kerala.The coastal strip lying between a place called Gokarna and Payaswini river of Kerala was known as Tuluva land or Tulu nadu. Udupi was one of the most important piligrimage centres of Tulu Nadu and continues to remain so.

Udupi is a land of ethereal beauty sandwiched between the lush greenery of Western Ghats on the East and the Arabin Sea on the West. Although it is a pilgrimage centre for Hindus it is also known world over as the birth place of Udupi Hotels , known to serve some the tastiest Indian vegetarian food and snacks especially items like Idly,Masala Dosa and Vegetarian Thali meals. Thali is a complete meal where one gets a variety of vegetarian dishes in small containers along with Rice, Rotis and Yogurt.It is a balanced, complete meal and excellent value for money.




Udupi is very famous for its temples .The Sri Krishna Temple , which is more than 1500 years old attracts thousands of visitors ,since it is also known for its beauty of architecture . There are several temples including two Shiva temples called Anantheshwars and Chandramouleshwara within the huge temple complex of Udupi . Besides, being a piligrimage centre Udupi is also home to several major banks in India namely Syndicate Bank, Canara Bank and Corporation Bank .

Other attractions



The Malpe beach and the St Mary's island are major tourist attractions. Many foreign tourists visit St Mary's island which is a group of small islands situated at a distance of about 35 - 40 kms from Malpe beach and there are frequent ferry services to the islands from both Mangalore and Malpe. One can also hire private boats to go to St mary's island. The islands are unique in that they have Basaltic rock formations which are thousands of years old . The islands are owned by the State government of Karnataka and except for a small token building built and owned by the state authorities there is absolutely nothing else on it.Visitors are free to wander about and enjoy the beauty of the place.It gets crowded during weekends when families go there with picnic lunches and spend the entire day soaking themselves in the safe, hidden beaches within the rock formations..



Manipal is another place that one must visit while in Udupi. Manipal is situated at a distance of 8 kilometers from Udupi on the top of a hill and is very scenic since it is surrounded by Palghuni river and End point is a very famous spot visited by almost all visitors who go to manipal..It is an educational center known throughout the world. Many foreign students come to study here .The place also has the main administrative offices of many banks. Most people especially youngsters visiting Udupi like to stay in one of the many hotels situated here since it is much more scenic and has a cosmopolitan crowd. One can see people of different nationalities here.

There are many places one can visit from Udipi namely Karkala and Moddabidri, where one finds many interesting Jain architectures and the Gomateshwara statue situated on a small hill.One can also plan a visit to Maravanthe beach which is an absolutely beautiful spot situated at a distance of about 65 kilometers from Udupi. Here, the road is built in between the sea and the river and one gets a heady feeling while driving through.The beach has white sand and swaying palms and is very attractive.

The best thing for me in this article was the presence of the tourist map. It gives an idea and a comparative distance of the place from where one lives. By the way, this is a place I didn''t hear before. So, the presence of the tourist map touched me even more than the places I would normally know.
