Tooth care

Tooth care is an aspect not to be neglected during pregnancy, in fact most physicians are of the opinion that it is important to to visit your dentist and make sure that your dental health is in good condition.

Pregnancy causes some decay causing situations - one of them is related to morning sickness.Women have an increased tendency to feel sick during the early months of pregnancy. This due to the hormonal disturbances that occur at this time. Vomiting brings up Hydro-chloric acid from the stomach, which has got a rather harmful effect on teeth. It tends to dissolve calcium away , thus decalcifying the teeth. This situation can be taken care of easily by washing the mouth with soda water after a bout of vomiting.

Many women have cravings for spicy and sour things during pregnancy and some like to eat a lot of sweets - all of which hasten tooth decay, because the quantities of acid or sugar that pass through the mouth gets increased. They may not clean their mouth after eating since they feel tired easily and may not want to go through the extra effort , which only makes the situation worse. So, it is important that a pregnant woman brushes her teeth at least twice a day to avoid any side effects at a later stage.

One need not worry about an x-ray .Dental x-ray beam is very thin and falls only on your teeth and gum, so there is no fear of radiation to the fetus. However, as an added precaution dentists place a lead apron across the abdomen of a pregnant woman just to make her feel more confident and secure.

In some cases Gum tissues become sore ,tender and painful during pregnancy , so much so that ,there have been cases where tumor formation has taken place within a matter of 3 or 4 months. It is therefore advisable to take medication and treatment early, as soon as there is some soreness or swelling in the gum.Normally scaling of tartar from the teeth and medication is all that is required to set things right. However, if a tumor has formed, it might bleed with very little k pressure within the mouth like eating or gargling. This has to be removed through a minor surgery so that it does not develop further and lead to further more serious complications

Actually I have written some articles about pregnancy before. I have talked about the morning sickness and the side effects of smoking and drinking alcohol or coffee. However, the thought of dental care during pregnancy is the first time for me to read it. I mean, I never imagined that there could be that (dental) care to be taken during these days for women. I was taken by surprise when I saw the title and read your article in one breath. That was indeed informative.
