In this article I have highlighted the open air paved pathway and unearthing of a subterranean tunnel, an interesting feature that has lately been revealed between Amber and Jaigarh fort, Jaipur, India. This informative article about Jaigarh and Amber fort complex will provide reasons why this palatial unit is a must to visit place.
Jaigarh fort, built in 1726 is one of the strongest forts of India. It stands on the Aravalli hill peaks on Jaipur-Delhi highway 15 kms away from the Pink city. The fort made of red sandstone is named after the ruler, Sawai Jai Singh II. It is a famous legendary centre of artillery production since the ancient times. It houses the world’s largest cannon named “Jaivan†weighing 50 tonnes. The barrel is 6.15 meters in length. Mounted on wheels, it can be turned 360 degrees to fire in any direction. It uses 100 kilograms gun powder to ignite the cannon and it can cover a distance of 35 km. The palace complex of the fort has a beautiful garden. It encompasses royal rooms, armoury and museum. There are two temples within the fort premises.
Jaigarh, the magnificent medieval era fort is located 400 meters above the spectacular Amber fort. The two forts are a single unit connected by an 18th century old underground tunnel. The 800 meters long subterranean passage is 14 feet in depth and 10 feet wide. At the Amber fort basement many tunnel sub-sections join the main tunnel from the various places like the king’s quarters, queens and women quarters, barracks, etc. This tunnel was built with the purpose of defence to evacuate the royal family to Jaigarh fort at times of attack on Amber fort. About 325 metres of the tunnel which is only a portion of the 800 meters long tunnel has been excavated by the government and revealed for the tourists. The 325 metres, open air tunnel runs between “Madho Singh Than†at Amber fort and reaches “Ganesh pole†at Jaigarh fort. Tourists can take adventurous rides in the battery operated golf carts on the ancient paved pathway.
Amber fort palace complex is an unparalleled Rajput heritage that stands on the hilly slopes of the Aravalli hills. The “Maota lake†adds to the glory of the fort. The construction of the fort was started by king, “Man Singh†in 1592 and completed during the reign of “Sawai Jai Singh IIâ€. The fort is a marvel of its times. Suraj pole is the main entrance to the Jaleb Chowk inside the fort. Singh pole leads to the second floor where the deity of, “Kali†is placed and worshiped. The palace complex comprises of a hall where meetings were held, it is famous for the spectacular Rajput architectural beauty. The Ganesh pole situated south of the Jaleb chowk leads to THE queens and women quarters. The outstanding Sheesh Mahal, Yash Mandir, Sukh Mandir, Sohag Mandir, Jai Mandir are encircled by a well preserved, traditional green garden. The hall where VIP meetings used to be held is inlaid with jewels and precious stones on the walls. The palace of the then king Man Singh with the delicate and elegantly carved ivory work is unique.
To make the tourist visit an evergreen memory a musical extravaganza is held at the Kesar Kiyari complex of the Moata lake. The Amber Sound and Light Show is outstanding. It breaks the silence of the fort and brings the palace complex all alive.
