Repentance Can Revolutionise the World

February 27, 2013  by: Xavier  Points: 15   Category: Inspirational Stories    Views: 599

Repentance is the essential condition which brings spiritual improvement in a person. In fact, if all people of the world repent for their wrongdoings, it can bring about a revolution in the world.

With the ceremonies and prayers on Ash Wednesday (February 13) many Christian Churches began the holy season of Lent. It is a period of “forty days” of special prayers, penance, fasting, almsgiving and abstinence which culminates in the joyous celebration of Easter. The season of Lent is a time of repentance. It is a time when Christians endeavor to abandon sinful habits and make sincere efforts to bring about a conversion of heart. It is the time when believers try to turn their life from being world centered to God centered. They aim to attain this by attending extra devotions like ‘The Way of the Cross’ and by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. They make sincere efforts to live their Christian baptismal promises in their day to day life. The first reading in this day’s liturgy is an extract from the book of Prophet Joel. It says, “Rend not your clothes, rend your hearts”(Joel 2:13).

Repentance for wrongdoings is an essential condition for spiritual improvement in a person, for bringing a qualitative change in a person’s being. It is a precondition for receiving blessings of the kingdom of God. Jesus declares in the beginning of his public ministry, “Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand.”(Mathew 4:17). Blessings of repentance can be acquired not only by Christian believers but anyone who is willing to repent, be they members of other religions or atheists. Actually, repentance has the power to revolutionize all nations, cultures, all economic activities, all that concerns human beings and even the surroundings in which they live.

Let us suppose, all citizens of a nation, its leaders, its policy makers ,its industrialists, its lawyers and policemen, all men and women living within its boundaries repent from their wrongdoings what a revolution it would be! There would be peace and progress, blessings and happiness, justice and joy all over the nation. Let us suppose, every human being living on the earth repents from his wrong doings and resolves to be a better person, what a revolution it would be! All weapons on the land, air and water would be obsolete. “They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.”(Isaiah 2:4). This would be the kingdom of God on earth. It would be a new world order.

What a revolution it would be if all rulers of the world repent for formulating unjust laws and perpetrating injustice on certain sections of the ruled! What a revolution it would be if all government officers turn away from all forms of corruption! What a change it would bring if all those who are in business repent for resorting to dishonesty to make profit! What an order it would be if every human being abandons greed, self interest, anger, violence, jealousy and all acts that bring destruction and unhappiness in the human community!

Some may ask – Is it possible? Yes it is. Man has only to get rid of his pride and repent for his sins. Grace of God will flow into him and take over.
