A Special Drink for the festival of colours - Thandaai

Thandaai is a traditional drink for the occassion of Holi. It is flavoured milk and contains rich dry fruits.


Thandaai is most popular drink in North India. Here I am mentioning how to prepare delicious Thandaai for the occasion of Holi.


  • Full Cream Milk - 6 glasses

    Powdered Sugar (Bura) - 1/2 cup

    Almonds (Badam) - 1/2 cup

    Poppy Seeds (Khas-Khas) - 2 tablespoons

    Fennel Seeds (Saunf) - 2 tablespoons

    Pumpkin Seeds (Kaddu Ke Beej) - 2 tablespoons

    Cardamoms (Elaichi) - 10 to 12

    White Peppercorns (Safed Mirch) - approx 20

    Cloves (Laung) - 4

    Saffron (Kesar) - few strands

For Garnishing:

  • Pistachios (Pista) - 1/2 cup chopped

    Raisins (Kishmish) - 1 cup

    Melon Seeds (Tarbooz Ke Beej) - 2 tablespoons

    Gulkand (sweet preserve made of rose petals) - little bit


  • Boil the milk and keep aside till it cool down completely.

    Take almonds, poppy seeds, fennel seeds, pumpkin seeds, cardamoms, white peppercorns and clove in a blender and blend till it appears as a fine mixture.

    Add this in milk and mix it well. Keep the milk mixture in refrigerator for 2 to 3 hours to cool.

    Pass this cooled mixture through a sieve.

    Boil 2 tablespoons of milk and add some saffron strands in it, dissolve the strands in milk completely and add this to the milk mixture.

    Now add sugar to it and stir properly.

    Garnished it with Pistachios, Raisins, Melon Seeds and Gulkand.

    Serve chilled.


  • One can also use crushed ice while serving.

    Soy milk can be used in place of full cream milk to make it more healthy.

PS : Avoid to mix it with 'Bhang' as it converts to intoxicating drink from a refreshing drink.
