Munnar is the halcyon place to visit in God's own country Kerala. It is one of the elite destination for spending a memorable vacation. It is a hill station, surrounded by the mountains, located at an altitude of 6000 ft in Idukki district . Before independence, it was the summer resort of the British Government in South India.

Munnar means "Three Rivers" , as the name suggested it at the convergence of three river namely Madhurapuzha , Nallathanni and Kundaly . If anyone seeking refuge for peace, harmony and picturesque views, then Munnar is the suggested one. One can feel spellbound by its scenic beauty, it is extremely beautiful.It the place one can can fall in love with and never wish to leave after visiting here.

Encased in the God's own country - Kerala, Munnar poses awesome backdrop surrounded by blooming green tea plantations. It has combination of hills, valleys and bubbling streams. It is enriched with exclusive species of flora and fauna. Red sandalwood, rose wood, jungle jack and teak are some of the trees found in this territory. It is also famous for its wildlife and bird sanctuary. Munnar is also treat for bird lover who wants to watch sporadic species of birds in ampleness. All the things together make it a fascinating place to spend time in the lap of nature.

Tea Estates:

Tata Tea Museum

Tata Tea Museum is a very famous tourist attraction in Munnar. It is situated in Nallathanni Estate of Tata Tea which is just 2 kms from Munnar. The museum exhibit distinctive antiques, machines, furniture, old photographs and tools that have been used over the years here. You got welcome there with cardamom flavoured tea. One can see processing of tea in a processing unit of small factory which is allocated here. A video presentation which is of approx 20 mins screened here to show Munnar's historical, cultural and technological development with tea development.

Kolukkumalai Tea Estate

It is established the remote place around 35 kms from Munnar. It is around 8000 feet above sea level and known as highest tea state in the world. It is famous for its outstanding and luscious teas. Factory where the tea generation takes place from the traditional process is situated at the centre of the tea estate and constructed in British Period in year 1930 . Traditional tea-making contains a seven-step procedure which includes withering, rolling, sieving, fermenting, drying, fiber extraction, and grading , and all these takes place in this factory only . It is a inescapable place to visit, also famous for its breathtaking view of its surrounding.

Beautiful Parks:

Blossom International Park

It is 3 kms far from Munnar. It is spread over 18 acres of land and a must visit place of Munnar. Beautifully cultivated garden have rare species of flora and tress. Many amusing activities like water cycling, boating, cycling, roller skating , ropeways and swings are offered here. One can feel rejuvenated after visiting here.


This park was created to safeguard a rare species of the wild goats,Nilgiri Tahr. These goats can be found only in the south of the Himalayas. The Park was upgraded as National Park in 1978. The park is enriched with dense forest and lush green plants.While roaming one can locate few animals and birds like Elephant, Nilgiri langur, Nilgiri marten, Small-Clawed Otter, Tiger,Leopard , Nilgiri wood pigeon etc.


Thattekkad means flat forest, and this region consist of evergreen forest located between the streams of Periyar River. It was the first bird samctuary of Kerala. Salim Ali, the famous ornithologist illustrate this sanctuary as the richest bird habitat on peninsular India. It has opulence birdlife. Watching numerous species of forest birds and water birds are fieast for bird lovers and photographers. One can found Indian Pitta, Ground Thrush, Large-billed Leaf-warbler, Jerdon's Nightjar, Indian Cuckoo, Darters, Cormorants, Whiskered Terns, Collared Scops Owl, Frogmouths, Pompadour Green Pigeon, Yellow-browed Bulbuls etc while visiting here. The sanctuary is abode of different varieties of Cuckoos, the particular region is called "Cuckoo Paradise" , Drongo Cuckoo, Indian Hawk Cuckoo and Large Hawk Cuckoo are easily visible. Tourist can explore sanctuary with the help of guides.

Hill View Park, Idukki

Hill View Park is located in the proximity of the Idukki Arch Dam and Cheruthoni Dam. The park is constructed on a cliff at a height of 350 ft above dam water level. The natural garden is spread over an area of 8 acres of land and offers picturesque views of the surrounding regions (Cheruthoni and Idukki). Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) is responsible for its operation and management. One can spot various animals like elephant, bison, deer etc. Latest attraction of the park are herbal garden and children's play area, which gives addititive beauty to it. It is worth visiting.

Forest Rose Garden

It is a place where you can see a lot of varieties of flowers. The garden is well cultivated , it is another delight for nature's lovers specially for horticulture lovers. One can find a stall from where you can purchase variety of flowers and plants.

Cascaded Waterfalls:

Atukkad Waterfalls

It is a scenic waterfalls surrounded by hills and jungles. It is the one perfect for romantic gateway and picnics. It is an exhilarating experience for trekkers and hikers. One can find peace of mind and calmness here.

Cheeyappara Waterfalls:

The Cheeyappara Waterfall is between Neriamangalam and Adimali on the Kochi - Madurai Highway. It falls down from rocky slope in seven steps. It is a real delight for the everyone. This is also a great place for trekking. Its water never dries even in summer. It is admired place by mountaineers and trekkers and serves as base camp for these activities. It is an exemplary place for picnic.

Nyayamakad Waterfalls

It is just 10 kms from Munnar and located between Munnar and Rajamala, It is called as land of breathtaking waterfalls. The waters downrushed from a height of about 1600 metres. The fascinating vicinity make it an excellent picnic spot. It is also good for trekkers.

Lakkom Waterfalls

:It is on the way to Udumalaipettai from Munnar. This is constituent of the Eravikulam stream of ENP. It is worth visiting fall with cascaded look in a peaceful environment. One can enjoy swimming in it.

View Points:

Anamudi Peak

It is located at the convergence of the Cardamom Hills, the Anaimalai Hills and the Palani Hills in the southern region of ENP (Eravikulam National Park). Anamudi means "elephant's forehead," as name suggested it resemble elephant's forehead. It is the highest peak in the Western Ghats in South India. Nilgiri languors, Nilgiri Marten, Nilgiri Tahr, Asian Elephants, Gaur, Leopards, Bengal Tigers, and macaques are found here. It holds the largest viable population of the imperiled Nilgiri Tahr (Hermitages hylocrius). It is perfect place for trekking.

Thumpachi-Calveri-Samuchayam and Calveri Mount

Calveri Mount is also known as hill haven of Munnar . It is also a pilgrim detination. On the way to the one can found 14 crosses at regular intervals. It is a worth place to visit during Munnar trip. It offers an alluring view of Idukki Reservoir in addition to the beautiful view of tribal villages around. Kamakshy village is one its one side and Mariyapuram village is on the other side. One can see roaming elephants and other animals in the forests from here. Thumpachi-Calveri-Samuchayam is best place to meditate and relax in peace. It provides beautiful views of sunrise and sunset.


It is the perfect place for one who love photography. Scenic view of plantation (tea, coffee and cardamom), lush green forests, hills and mountains touching sky are amazing. It is a destination for trekkers, hikers and mountaineers.

Echo Point

It is an exquisite place to see the panoramic view of hills and lush green walks around. It is place where one can debark for some time in the nature's lap. One can enjoy coming back of own voice while blaring and screaming. All the kids and young one try this with enthuse.


It is situated at 1700 meter above sea level on the border of Kerala and Tamilnadu. Also it is the highest point in this region and famous for its panoramic view . A very rare flower Nilakurinji blooms here once in 12 years and make it look all blue at that time. It was last blooms in 2006 and place was crowded with tourists, as it blooms after 12 years everybody wants to take glimpse of the blue hill and valley.

Lockhart Gap

Very often spell as Lock Heart Gap, is just 13 km from Munnar and it is perfect place for trekking. View of mountain and hills are worth watching from here . It is near to Mattupetty town. This place offers some amazing views of the mist-clad blue hills covered with lush greenery, winding roads and silver brooks splashing the emerald greenery with white streaks. The exhilarating climate and vivid colored vibrating surroundings make it most preferred place to visit while touring Munnar.


It is located an altitude of 3000 ft and is an ideal place for picnic . It is alluring hill station approx 25 kms from Idukki and essays panoramic view of the mountain and the Muvattupuzha river. As it is at the boundary of the IWS (Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary), tourist get quick look of fauna from here.


t is around 10 kms from Munnar and having vintage look as many little cottages, bungalows, old playgrounds and courts are here. It emerged as one of the latest tourism destination in Munnar. It is famous for its Pallivasal Hydel Power Project, a great resource of hydro-electric power generation. Also famous for its hued view of tea plantations and spice nurseries.


It is the plot of first Hydro-Electric Project in Kerala, after that its gain the name and fame for tourism. Pallivasal is approximately 8 kms from Munnar and now a days popular place to visit. Its natural beauty is spellbinding, a luxuriated place by nature.

Dams And Lakes:

Idukki Arch Dam

Idukki Arch Dam is the Asia's biggest Arch Dam having height of approx 554 feets .It is standing upright between the two mountains - 'Kuravanmala' and 'Kurathimala' . DAM lies in the heart of the District Idukki and constructed on Periyar River. It was built and is maintained by the Kerala State Electricity Board. Cheruthoni and Kulamavu are two other dams which got constructed along with this and altogether three dams have fabricated an artificial lake. It has underground Power House at Moolamattom which generates approx 780 MW hydroelectric power. Major charm of this dam is its spectacular view of surrounding. Tourist can visit Kulamavu and Cheruthoni also, both are famous for its dams and scenic views. Cruise facility available to view the dams.

Kundala Dam And Lake

Kundala, is situated at an altitude of 1700 meters above sea level and is famous for its Dam and lake. Kundala Dam is Asia's first arched dam. One can take picturesque view to the vicinity from here. Resplendent Kundala Lake is adjacent to the dam, boating facility is available here for the tourists. One can take ride on Shikara boat to feel richness in experience.

Sita Devi Lake at Devikulam

Devikulam is at the 16 km distance from Munnar, it is small hill station, situated at an altitude of 1800 meter above sea level. Sita Devi Lake has its religious importance also, legend demonstrates that Goddess Sita bathed in the water of this Lake. From that time its water known for its healing properties and minerals.


It is famous for its Lake, Dam and Indo-Swiss farm. Dam is situated at an altitude of 1700 meters above sea level. Lake is also very beautiful, one can enjoy boating here. Boating facility is there for tourists, while boating you can view steep hills, greenery and sometimes animals like elephants. This is a great picnic spot to enjoy. The Indo-Swiss Live stock farm is worth seeing , varieties of over 100 high-yielding cattle are nurtured here. There are 11 sheds but visitors are allowed into 3 cattle sheds.

This is an excellent article with lots of useful and interesting information !Munnar is indeed a beautiful place to visit .The best time to visit this place is soon after the monsoon rains when the waterfalls are full and the greenery is even lusher if that were possible ...
