Bottle gourd Recipes

This article lists the preparation of few bottle gourd recipes and the benefits of bottle gourd.

         

Bottle gourd is a vegetable rich in water count and is one of the favourite vegetables of India.It is easy for cutting and cooking. It is called "Lauki" in Hindi and "Sorakkai" in Tamil.



Nutrient Facts :

Bottle gourd is an excellent source of iron. It is low in fat and cholesterol. It also has Vitamin C and B.It is suitable for low calorie diets.

Health Benefits:
1. It is the one of the best vegetable for losing weight as it contains more water content
2. It is one of the effective remedy for constipation,ulcer and digestive problems.
3. It is also used for treating urinary disorders.
4. It balances the functionality of liver.
5. Regular usage of the vegetable will help in preventing grey hair.

Recipes:

1.Bottle gourd Kootu:

Ingredients:

Medium sized bottle gourd - 1
Moong dal - handful
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Oil - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Urad dhal - 1 tsp
Salt - as per taste
Water - 1 glass
Curry leaves - few
Coriander leaves - few

For grinding :
Grated coconut - 3 tsp
Red chillies - 3
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp

Method:
1. Wash the bottle gourd cleanly with running water.
2. Peel the skin completely and cut it to 2 or 3 big pieces.
3. Cut the big piece to small pieces after removing the white seeds.
4. Take a broad vessel.Add chopped bottle gourd,moong dhal,turmeric powder,water and mix it well.
5. Keep in medium flame till the bottle gourd is cooked.Keep it aside after it is cooked.
6. Gring all the items listed above to a fine paste.
7.Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.
8.When mustard seeds sputters out,add urad dhal and fry till it becomes slightly brown.
9. Add grinded paste, cooked bottle gourd, salt and mix it well.
10. Keep in low flame for 5 minutes till the raw smell goes.
11. Remove pan from, garnish with curry leaves and coriander leaves.

Note:
This can be taken as a side dish for rice or can be mixed with rice and eaten.

2. Bottle gourd curry / subzi

Ingredients:

Bottle gourd (medium size)- 1
Onion(medium size) - 1
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Chilli powder - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Urad dhal - 1 tsp
Oil - 3 tsp
Water - 1/4 glass
Curry leaves - few
Coriander leaves - few
Salt - As per taste

Method:
1. Wash the bottle gourd cleanly with running water.
2. Peel the skin completely and cut it to 2 or 3 big pieces.
3. Cut the big piece to small pieces after removing the white seeds.
4. Take a broad vessel.Add chopped bottle,turmeric powder,water and mix it well.
5. Keep in medium flame till the bottle gourd is cooked and the water is completely drained.
6. Take onion and chop to small pieces.
7. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.
8. When mustard seeds sputters out,add urad dhal.
9. When urad dhal becomes reddish brown, add onion and fry it.
10. When onion becomes soft, add cooked bottle gourd,salt,chilli powder and mix it well.
11.Keep it for sometime till the raw smell goes.
12. Before removing from flame,add grated coconut and fry it for a minute.
13. Remove it from the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.

This can be taken as side dish for rice,roti and naan.

3. Bottle gourd juice

Ingredients:

Bottle guard(small) - 1
Mint leaves / Tulsi leaves - few
Pepper powder - 1 tsp
Water - 1 glass
Salt - As per taste

Method:

1. Wash the bottle gourd cleanly with running water.
2. Peel the skin completely and grate it.
3. Grind together grated bottle guard, tulsi/mint leaves and salt in a grinder / mixer.
4. Mix water with the juice in the ratio.
5. Add pepper powder and mix it well.

1 tsp of lemon juice can be added instead of mint/tulsi leaves.
